It gives me such joy when I can turn on the TV and see women who look like me and have hair like mine, wearing it proudly. They have such power when they walk into a scene or on the red carpet with the pride that comes with celebrating your true self. From YouTube series like Hello Cupid, to Olivia Pope and Viola Davis showing their natural curls on prime time, 2014 was a year where women with natural hair become more common on the small and big screen.
Below are some of my favorite celebrity Naturalistas who rocked natural locs in 2014!
Award season is here! This year I’m looking forward to seeing all the amazing natural hairstyles from some of my favorite celebrity naturalistas. On Friday, the 46th NAACP Image Awards aired on TVOne and the various natural hairstyles on celebrities from Ava DuVernay, Tracee Ellis-Ross, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw left me in awe! It is official, this is the year of celebrity natural hair!
Take a look at some of the beautiful celebrity naturalistas who graced us with their fabulous hair!
Last year was a phenomenal period for the natural hair movement! Naturalistas came out in full force to represent their curly coifs and show off their unique style. There was a surge of creative cuts, colorful curls, and ever growing strands as a result of hair growth challenges taking place every month. Out of all the amazing styles, there were a few that rose to the top of the popularity list.
Here is my list of natural hairstyle trendsetters for 2014:
If you have been following this blog you know that one of my goals is to share information about African American HAIRitage and history. Therefore, every Black History Month, I like to look back at our past and share information on where we’ve come and where we are going on our hair journey to reclaim and rewrite our hair story. This Black History Month, I want to join other history makers and help write our hair history. Therefore, I will be doing a month long blog series focused on recapping the important moments in the natural hair movement during 2014.
Stay tuned as I discuss a variety of topics including natural hair trends, national spotlights on natural hair, whether the movement is “selling out”, and what the movement gained and lost in 2014. I hope you join me for the series!
I’ve been obsessed with my hair ever since 2011 when I first tried 2-strand twists. I was amazed by how well my hair responded to the style, I had no idea my hair could do what it did! Since then, you couldn’t tell me nothing about my hair…okay!
I’ve had such a wonderful hair journey, discovering what my hair is capable of, and appreciating its versatility. Yet, there are still things that I need to improve about my hair regime and new styles that I want to try in 2015.
